- Fenghuang Ancient City (Fenghuang, Hunan)
A Brief Introduction
Southern China includes the provinces of Guangdong, Henan, Hainan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as well as Hongkong and Macau. To the west is Guangxi which is less developed with lots of minorities and to the north is Guilin, a rather famous destination for tourists, known for its magical landscapes and natural scenery. Hainan island meanwhile is known as a tropical destination whereas HongKong (see must visit spots here) speaks for itself as a rather bustling destination with magnificfent skylines, while Macau sets itself apart as the “Las Vegas of Asia”. Guangzhou is a port on the north of Hongkong that boasts of it’s architecture, and has been China’s busiest trading center for centuries. It’s one of China’s biggest cities and our starting point for this Travel Guide.

How to Get There
We flew from Clark to Guangzhou via Cebu Pacific Air and it took us less that three hours to get there. Cebu Pacific also offers flights to Guangzhou and Shenzen straight from Manila and if you are coming from the Philippines, then I suggest booking your flights here because of it’s low base fares and offers direct flights already. They also opened a direct flight from Clark just last year, so it’s become super convenient for you weary travellers.
If you are coming from elsewhere, It’s advised to jump off from either Guangzhou or Shenzen since from there, the first stop in the itinerary will be Guilin, and coming from these two points will be easier should you follow our itinerary.

Transportation: 526 + 755 + 144 + 10 + 375 + 450 = 2,260/2 persons = 1,200Y per person for 8 days and 7 nights (rounded up from 1,130Y)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
DO YOU NEED A VISA?
Yes. For me getting a visa to china was almost the same as getting one for Canada. It takes two weeks processing time and I had to provide my:
- Bank statement
- Bank Certificate
- Income tax receipt
- Business Permit,
- and my old Passport.
*For students, you need to have your Certificate of Enrollment as well as your Bank Statement.
IS CHINA A SAFE PLACE TO TRAVEL TO?
I cannot speak for Beijing and Shanghai but Guilin, Guangzhou and Hunan was okay for me. I never experienced getting scammed. The local train and bus stations were efficient and easy to navigate and people were helpful. I’d say it’s as safe as travelling to Japan.
IS THERE A LANGUAGE BARRIER?
There definitely is which is why I recommend downloading apps like Pleco and Google Translate. It also helps a lot to learn basic Mandarin phrases so you don’t have to pull out your phone every time.
Overall, China was a magical experience! I already knew that the landscapes would be out of this world but seeing them firsthand stirred something in my soul. Budget-wise, I would say that it’s pretty worth it considering that we stayed there for over a week. Getting around was pretty convenient, too, because their public transportation was tourist-friendly and super modernized! And the best part? The FOOD was everything I dreamed it would be. I could literally have a full-course meal at a convenience store and I’d be happy!
